HOUSE JULIUS SPIEGEL

In the old town road (Altstadtstraße) no. 14, we find the parental home of Paul Spiegel - the former head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. Paul Spiegel’s grandfather Levi moved to Versmold around 1872. In the old town road no. 14 he ran a butcher and cattle trade. His son Julius and Julius’s son Hugo operated the flourishing company further until the stores broke down during the Nazi period. Julius Spiegel fled to the United States while his son Hugo and his family resettled to Warendorf. Hugo’s wife gave birth to their son named Paul on the 31st of December in 1937. The parent company of the family in Versmold was sold to the cattle dealer Richard from Kölkebeck; further changes of ownership followed.
